Overview

Name | Version: datamatrix 1.0
Author: FrankieG
Device Type: Instrument
Description: datamatrix is a Max/Jitter instrument that generates visuals by analysing the audio input. The look of visuals is inspired by Ryoji Ikeda's clean and minimal style (try to use the patch with the audio from Ikeda's great performance 'Test Pattern' in Barcelona 2010 -you can find it on youtube as 'datamatrix'. Of course it was not my purpose to copy his entire set so some of the fragmentation effects he uses are missing to avoid that).
Use it for studying, share it, and please email me if you do something nice with it or if you work to modify/improve it... or if you just have some feedback. I'll be very glad: francesco.grani (at) gmail.com

Usage: just Insert this visual module on you master channel in Ableton Line or elsewhere you find it useful. A floating video window is created when you insert the instrument: its purpose is to be dragged on a secondary screen for projection.Every parameter of the patch can be controlled via MIDI.

enjoy!

Hi Francesco,

Great work. I am doing my honours based around generative graphics from audio. Would you perhaps be comfortable with me using you plugin to help guide mine? I am pretty new to Max in general, though very adept with live. Would be great to use your design to help me with mine. Thanks for your time.

Mike.
Hi Mike,

Thanks. Of course, you're welcome to use it as you wish :)
If you are going to do some editing/improvements just drop me an email when you feel like, and let's see where you/we end up to. Feel free to write me also if you just want some exchange/feedback of course. It's good for me also to have feedback ;)
cheers,
Francesco
Awesome job :)
Hi Francesco,

Thanks a lot, that's fantastic :)

I am currently bogged down with written work, I will be working on development over the Christmas Holidays and will definately keep you upto date with what I am doing.

By the end of May 2015 you will have a paper that heavily references your work, as your device seems very unique. It's truly great, my tutor seems excited too that I have your blessing to work on my own version of your work.

The main things I am looking to add are some parameters that allow for some more randomization of the visuals if the user wanted, and a close mapping of the colour to the frequency spectrum in the audio. Something along the lines of the "Flux" analyser if you have seen that?

Anyways, I look forward to the next few months, thanks again Francesco :)

Mike
@Fades

Please could you post the device here after you modify it? I'm very interested in this device and I also want to modify it for my live performance, it would be really cool to see what you do with it.

Cheers,
J
This is an amazing device. Great work Frankie! Just one question for you: I use VDMX in conjunction with Ableton Live and I'm wondering if there's a way to route the visuals from datamatrix into VDMX. It could be awesome to use the datmatrix output as an alpha mask in VDMX. Thanks for your help, and for creating this device.
amazing device
thanks for sharing
Downloaded this to use in my Max7. Can you tell me how I can operate this in Max7 7. I dragged to maxforlive patches folder in max7, but don't seem to get the controls working. Any advice? Also as a visual artist would love to experiment with above variations on patch as discussed above especially with random parameters figures Very new to Max.
