Overview

Name | Version: Grain Storm 1.0
Author: ijoaudio
Device Type: Instrument
Description: Grain Storm is a granular exploration device built with gen~ in Max4Live. I've wanted to explore the world of granular for a long time and this is my first of likely many of such devices.

While there are many granular devices out there in the world, I've tried to take the tried and true guts of granular and inject something of my own vibe into it here.  I've developed some interesting ways to scrub very slowly (or very quickly) through a piece of audio (great for PaulXStretch type ambient explorations), as well as ways to turn a granular drone into something more percussive via three dials (Decay, Ramp and S&H).

I've also added a very dreamy and freezable reverb for instant ambient bliss, a one-pole filter for quick smoothing of harsh grains and, if you're familiar with some of my past devices, you'll recognize the Magic panel.  This is my own take on a multi-effects section -  ear candy.  Seven artisanal effects, each which react differently to the Magic Amount dial, just something to hopefully inspire and take your audio into new territories.  We've got some lush chorus, an aggressive tremolo, a haas widener, and then some more esoteric combinations like a glitchy phased delay, a stuttering vibrato, etc.

Features:

- Automate playback speeds up to extreme values via the Move dial
- Shape drone sounds into percussive ones via the Decay, Ramp and S&H dials
- Standard granular controls such as Size, Density and Spray
- Stereo widening
- Pitch shift grains from -24 to +24 semitones
- Spread and jitter controls for injecting both subtle and extreme pitch variations
- Smoothing control to smooth out grains that become too clicky or shrill with a one-pole filter
- One knob reverb (with Freeze control) for making any sound into a lush atmosphere
- The Magic panel - seven artisanal FX, completely unique from the Magic panels of my previous devices, ranging from chorus, widening, tremolo to full-on warping and glitching combinations

Grain Storm is an ambient playground of exploration.  It's been tested to work with Live 11 Suite and of course, Live 12 Suite - both PC and Mac.

Seems like an interesting granular device. Owning Live 12 Suite with Robert Henke's Granulator III + a few other granular VST Synth, I'm having a hard time justifying another granular tool. But just out of curiosity, what's the Min and Max grain lenght? And for the Density, how thick the grain clouds can get and how simultaneous grains can be generated? Thx in advance!
