Overview

Name | Version: FormAnt 1.010117
Author: hallmd
Device Type: Instrument
Description: This is an update to FormAnt, a six-formant, subtractive monosynth that constitutes part of a long-term, ongoing, university laboratory project. It seeks to use a parallel bank of several band-pass filters (with dynamic control of center frequency, bandwidth, and amplitude, as found in traditional speech synthesizers) to generate simplified models of speech sounds and musical instrument tones for use in psychoacoustic research. The synthesizer also has been developed to be a very responsive and expressive MIDI instrument.

A 50-harmonic oscillator bank has been added that permits user-assignable amplitudes for each harmonic via text files that can be generated either independently or easily within the host environment. A small directory of initial text files is provided, as are a few new presets to serve as starter examples of the oscillator bank. Several programming adjustments also have been included to better manage CPU usage.

As before, FormAnt is provided within a bundle of devices that include versions with and without complimentary effects. Separate effects racks are provided for use with other devices, as are example presets. Product registration assures technical support for the life of the product, and proposed modifications will be considered. More information about this project and synth can be found at http://www.psyc.jmu.edu/undergraduate/auditoryperception/software.html, where the product bundle also can be downloaded.
