Overview

Name | Version: PM Synth 1.0
Author: OspreyInstruments
Device Type: Instrument
Description: Phase Modulation (PM) is the technique that is actually used most commonly by "FM Synths". This synth is intended to augment (not replace) Operator. With 6 operators and a full mod matrix, it offers quite a lot more routing flexibility than Operator. However, the CPU use is pretty high with higher counts of polyphony (I capped it at 8 voices), and it doesn't have the nice additive engine that Operator includes.

A note of the mod matrix:

Columns represent the output of each operator. Rows can be thought of as inputs, with rows A-F being routed to this operator's PM input. The bottom row is the is the output of this voice, so mapping an operator's output to this row will tap this as an audio output.

A word of caution:

The diagonal (starting from the top left) will create feedback loops by mapping an operator's output to its own PM input. Be careful with the level, as going above 30% can get a bit out of hand. Also, higher levels of modulation are more prone to aliasing, especially when the course ratio is up, or playing in a higher register. There is oversampling baked in, but it doesn't completely alleviate the aliasing.

Most features should be pretty self-explanatory, but I anticipate some confusion around the MW and AT toggles. When the former is engaged, the mod wheel will increase the LFO frequency from where it is set on the panel. The latter will modulate the LFO depth with aftertouch.

Usage:

I have included the abstraction files in case there is any complications or compatibility issues loading the device on different systems. That said, you should only need to load in the "PM Synth.amxd" file to access the device.

I hope people enjoy this synth! If you like what I am doing, please consider supporting me :)
